IT has been 10 years since two teenagers were tragically killed in a car crash — and their school friends remember it like it was yesterday.

On December 1 2007, Jonny Sharples and Danny Harrison, both aged 17, died when their car smashed into a tree in Old Kiln Lane, Heaton.

Nick Holt, who went to Bolton School with the teens from Aspull and Heaton respectively, will be one of eight people to undertake a 250-mile bike ride to London Stadium in their memory.

And he spoke of how the incident was still ‘fresh’ in their minds.

The Lostock man said: “It is still quite a surreal thing that happened when we were all at school.

“It has been 10 years and we have all left school, gone through university and have jobs, but the whole thing feels quite fresh in our minds.”

“We still see Jonny’s mum and dad because he was a only child and it was so difficult for them.”

The 27-year-old will be riding around 80 miles a day with friends Jay Murray, Andrew Hodgson, Jonny Parkinson, Oliver Relph, Ben Murphy, Andy Pantelidies and Tom Waugh.

They will set off from Jonny Sharples’ parents’ home in Aspull on Wednesday, October 18 and are hoping to reach London Stadium on the Friday to watch West Ham, the team Jonny supported, take on Brighton.

After discussions with Jonny’s parents Dave and Cath, the group will be raising money for When You Wish Upon A Star, a charity granting wishes for children with life threatening illnesses.

Mr Holt said: “The group is made up of mainly good friends of Jonny but we were friends with both of them so we’re doing it in both of their memories.

“I knew them both through school and we have been fundraising for them over the last 10 years.

“But we were all sitting around a table in the pub and we just thought we wanted to do something special to mark the 10th year.

“Everyone has been putting in the training and we have all bought bikes.

“I did not have a bike until three weeks ago but I am a keen sportsman. I play a lot of football.

“I am a bit apprehensive about it but I am excited.”
