THOUSANDS of jobseekers were helped onto the career ladder at Bolton's Jobs and Skills Fair.

More than 3,000 jobs were on offer at the borough's biggest employment and training event.

The fair is held every year at Bolton College in partnership with Bolton Council, Bolton at Home, Job Centre Plus and the University of Bolton, members of the work and skills partnership, Team Bolton.

More than 2,500 jobseekers and people seeking employment advice were given the opportunity to speak to over 70 employers, including Warburtons and Aldi.

Representatives from the police and the army were also at the fair.

Employment opportunities included full-time, part-time, apprenticeships and placements as well as advice on starting your own business.

Cllr Anna-Marie Watters, Cabinet Member for Social Inclusion, Voluntary Services and Skills, said: "This was a fantastic event enabling local residents to get information, advice and guidance on careers, education and volunteering all under one roof. It was amazing to see the support shown by local employers who had more than 3,000 jobs on offer."

As well visiting the 'employment marketplace', jobseekers were able to find out how to look after their health and wellbeing, preparation for work tips and money management advice in the 'wellbeing zone'.

Bolton West MP Chris Green said: "It is a really worthwhile event and is very good for Bolton as it meets the needs of the local community – access to quality information, advice and training to find employment."

Following the Jobs and Skills Fair, the college hosted the Futures4Me event, which gives advice and guidance to Year 11 pupils and their parents.

Visitors were able to speak to employers and training providers directly about local career opportunities and enjoy a range of have-a-go activities such as hairdressing and motor-mechanics, provided by the college.

Bill Webster, Principal of Bolton College said: "We are privileged to hold these events every year. It’s an ideal way for people to talk directly to companies who are looking to recruit and feedback from employers, jobseekers and learners is always positive."
