COUNCILLORS will be asked to show their support for new voter ID measures again tonight, after town hall bosses backed out of a government trial programme.

The council voted in April to support a Conservative-led motion calling on Bolton to put itself forward as a pilot authority to test increased security measures at polling booths, which would require voters to provide proof of identity at the next local elections.

However, the town hall withdrew its name from consideration for the scheme last month, sparking anger from the town’s Tories.

Cllr John Walsh, who raised the original motion, will asked his fellow representatives to ‘re-affirm and endorse its support’ for the scheme at a meeting at the town hall this evening.

Also on the agenda for the meeting is an update on the repair works being carried out around Moses Gate station, in Farnworth, where a water main burst this summer.

Cllr Sean Hornby will ask for an update on the timescale for the repairs, which could last until February.

He will also ask if work can be carried out through the night to bring the completion date forward and provide some relief for frustrated residents.

The town hall meeting starts at 7pm tonight. Follow live coverage at theboltonnews.co.uk
