Unison members travel to Houses of Parliament for public sector pay rally

Unison members will be lobbying MPs and holding a rally in Parliament Square this evening

Bolton’s two Labour MPs, Sir David Crausby and Yasmin Qureshi, have already backed the union’s calls for the Government to scrap the one per cent cap on public sector wage rises.

Angela Lohan, a Bolton Council worker from Westhoughton, said: “Across public services, public sector workers have suffered from seven years of pay freezes, some people are really struggling.

“Since the Manchester Arena and Grenfell Tower tragedies, we have heard platitudes about firefighters, police officers, nurses and paramedics from Theresa May and government ministers.

“The truth is that the empty promises we have seen so far do not go anywhere near enough. Unison along with other public sector trade unions is fighting for a end to the public sector pay cap for all public sector workers.

“Public sector workers are working hard to provide frontline services that we all rely on and are taken for granted.”

Parliament will debate scrapping the cap on December 4.
