FIRE safety teams providing checks and advice to householders have carried out their 1,000th home visit.

Bolton Daybreak Rotary Club, in partnership with Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service, has been carrying out calls around Bolton to check on fire risks, give advice and fit smoke alarms free of charge.

And a team recently had their landmark house visit when they knocked on the door of Yvonne Valentine in Egerton.

Mrs Valentine said: "It’s very important that people should learn about fire risks. I am pleased with the visit today and have learned something new — not to try to escape through our bathroom window but to stay put, close the door against the fire and phone the fire brigade."

She said she was pleased with the new smoke alarms that were fitted.

Anyone who would like a visit from the team can call 0800 555 815.
