STREETS will be lined with hundreds of poppies to raise money for charity in the build up to Remembrance Sunday.

Plans are underway to get the streets of Bromley Cross, Astley Bridge and Bradshaw awash with poppies and proceeds from sponsorship will be going to The Royal British Legion.

Local businesses and residents pay £5 to get a poppy attached to a lamppost throughout the area in the run up to Remembrance Sunday.

The poppies will start to appear this Sunday (22) but people can still get involved and do their bit over the next month.

More than £3,000 was raised last year through the scheme with a poppy tied to more than 600 lampposts.

The remembrance events in the area will culminate on Sunday, November 12 when a service will be held at the Dunscar War Memorial from 10.50am.

Last year's service at the memorial saw more than 2,000 people gather to pay their respects and lay the wreaths.

Cllr David Greenhalgh, who is organising the Bromley Cross ward campaign, said: "The response last year was overwhelming. We installed more than 600 poppies last year throughout Egerton, Bromley Cross, and down to Bradshaw Brow, raising more than £3000 for The Royal British Legion, but the effect was it really brought the community together, while also providing a fitting display of remembrance.

"After all this to then see the largest turn-out ever at Dunscar War Memorial on Remembrance Sunday last year, was both stirring and moving."

Local primary schools are also taking part in decorating the area, by producing pieces of artwork themed around remembrance to be displayed.

Local Guides and Brownies at St Andrews Church in Bromley Cross are leading on a project to produce displays of poppies around the war memorial as part of a wider Bolton scheme led by Val Hulme from Bolton at Home.

Cllr Hilary Fairclough, who leads on the scheme in Astley Bridge, said: "It was a fantastic project to be involved in last year, which brought a real sense of pride to the area, while at the same raising a great deal of money for such a worthwhile cause and it provoked conversations between young children and their parents about why it is so important to remember those that gave their lives at such a young age."

The poppies will remain up throughout November and there is still time to pledge your support.
