ADAM Le Fondre turned out alongside a number of first team regulars as the Development Squad made a return to winning ways against Sheffield Wednesday.

The Whites striker scored from the penalty spot six minutes in to set David Lee and Tony Kelly’s side on their way to a 3-1 victory, and only their second of the campaign to date.

Phil Parkinson has two big trips coming up at Fulham and Sunderland and is keen to keep his whole first team squad fit and firing. As such, Reece Burke, Josh Cullen, Derik Osede, Dorian Dervite, Antonee Robinson and Jeff King were all given a run-out.

The strength of the squad told early on and after a lively start Wanderers seized the advantage from the spot.

Both Le Fondre and Ryan White rattled Cameron Dawson’s woodwork before Jeff King wound up to shoot and was tripped by the hapless Liam Williams.

Le Fondre smashed home from 12 yards with some satisfaction.

And the former Cardiff City striker looked hungry for more, driving one right-footed shot into the side netting and chipping another effort over the keeper and on to the roof of the net.

A few lapses in concentration from Derik and Robinson briefly threatened to let the Owls back in but King settled any jitters with a smart finish after cutting in from the right edge of the box.

To their credit, Wednesday hauled themselves back into the game almost immediately as Matt Penney’s corner flicked off Robinson and into the empty net.

Freddie Murphy could have made it two apiece, heading wide from close range after Warren Clarke had played an excellent ball in from the right.

The pace slowed after the break but Wanderers regained control, keeping possession for long spells. White and Derik had shots from long range but there was little urgency to score a third.

Just after the hour, Le Fondre and Derik were brought off for Connor Hall and Alex Perry and it was former Sheffield United man Hall who pounced for the third to make the game safe.

The young striker burst through the middle on a pass from Cullen to nudge the ball past Dawson and into the net but ref Steven Copeland signalled for a penalty.

Hall kept his composure to claim the ball and beat the Owls keeper once again from the spot.
