FIREWORKS have been thrown at crews as they attended a bonfire started by youths in a park.

Crews were called Boardman Street Halliwell just after 5.30pm after six youths started a bonfire.

GreaterManchester Mayor Andy Burnham, who was caught up in the attack, has described the attacks as sickening as he joins firefighters from Bolton on their busiest night of the year.

Calls are coming in thick and fast to fire control now.

One of the incidents includes a car being destroyed in a blaze started by a firework.

Firefighters were called Farnworth at 9.18pm.

A firework was found in the wheel of a Citroen.

No one was injured in the fire.

GMFRS Bolton Borough tweeted: “Firework found in the wheel of what used to be a Citroen. Thankfully no one was hurt.

“Setting a car on fire is not big and it’s definitely not clever, swift work by Farnworth keeping people safe.

“Belongings saved for owner but unfortunately a firework has destroyed this car.”

At 5.36pm Crews were called to an unsupervised bonfire in Oakford Walk, Bolton, just minutes later at 5.42pm they were called to Back Bury New Road to a fire set by kids which was getting out of control and at 5.44pm the fire service received calls from residents concerned about a fire out of control on Back Lawn Street.

Just after 6pm crews were alerted to a 25ft high bonfire in Castle Street.

At 6.11pm crews were called to the back of Boardman Street where wheelie bins have been set on fire in the park.

At 6.26pm firefighters received reports of a fire in a basketball court in Mytham Road with children setting alight wheelie bins and setting off fireworks.

There are reports of youths throwing fireworks in Dealey Road, Bolton while at 6.35pm crews were called to Parkfield Road to  a fire in a park.

Reports have come in about youths building a fire with fireworks at 6.39pm.Crews have been called to the fire in a yard at the back of a school in Gibraltar Street, Deane.

Concerns have been raised about a large bonfire close to the electricity sub station in Seddon Street, Little Hulton.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue is currently responded to bonfires across the region.
