THE people of Kearsley and Stoneclough are being asked to support a beautiful tribute to the fallen as Remembrance Sunday approaches.

The Kearsley Festival Group is working with Cllr Mark Cunningham and William Pilkington of The Grapes Hotel to place giant poppies on lamp posts.

Members want to line the area’s two main roads with the large poppies.

They are appealing for local residents, businesses and organisations to support the project.

And for £5 they can sponsor a poppy which will be placed on a lamp post along either Manchester Road, Bolton Road, Stoneclough Road, Market Street and Ringley Road.

Cllr Cunningham said: “This is a wonderful opportunity for the people of Kearsley to honour all those who fell in the wars. “This year marks the 100th Anniversary of Passchendaele also known as the 3rd Battle of Ypres from which many men including a significant number from our town did not return.

“It has particular significance for me and I’m sure it does for so many others, as it was a battle my own grandfather fought in coming only a year after fighting in the Somme and it is hard for us today to realise the horrors that they had to face and the sacrifices they made to keep our country free.”

To sponsor a poppy send £5 per Poppy via PayPal to kearsleyfestivalgroup@hotmail.com or visit The Grapes Hotel it Stoneclough, with cash or cheque p ayable to Churches on the Mount. The group has 100 poppies to sponsor. Similar tributes with large poppies are appearing across Bolton. The town will honour the fallen on Sunday.
