A GOVERNMENT ban on bee-harming pesticides has got a Bolton MP buzzing.

Chris Green, who is vice chairman of the all-party parliamentary group on bees, has welcomed the announcement by Environment Secretary Michael Gove on tougher restrictions for neonicotinoid pesticides.

The Secretary of State said that, unless the scientific evidence changes, the UK supports further restrictions on the use of these pesticides and will maintain these increased restrictions post-Brexit.

This follows advice from the government’s advisory body on pesticides which said scientific evidence now suggests the environmental risks posed by neonicotinoids — particularly to our bees and pollinators — are greater than previously understood.

The Conservative MP for Bolton West said: “Bees pollinate all sorts of fruit and vegetables and are hugely important to our survival — without them, we would quite simply not last very long.

“I’m very pleased that the government is taking this important step of imposing tougher restrictions on these bee-harming pesticides.

“This is an issue that has been raised with me by close to 1,000 residents in Bolton West and Atherton so I’m pleased that the government has listened.”
