WANDERERS Under-18s were held to a goalless draw at home against Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.

In their latest U18 Professional Development League outing, Nicky Spooner's side were looking to build on the previous week's 5-4 victory at Huddersfield Town.

But they came up against a stubborn young Owls side at the Eddie Davies Academy.

The visitors defended deep from the start allowing Wanderers plenty of possession.

And the hosts moved the ball without being able to make a breakthrough.

The Whites' first chance came on 15 minutes when the ball broke to Luca Navarro, but he rushed his shot and sent it wide. Matty Barnes then looked to get in behind but again Wanderers lacked quality in the final third.

The second half started in the same fashion as the first with Wednesday allowing Spooner's side to have the lion's share of possession while looking to break on the counter.

Matty Fearnley had an opportunity to open the scoring but his effort was easily saved by the Owls keeper.

At the other end, James Aspinall kept the game goalless when he saved bravely at the near post.

It followed the same pattern to the end as Wednesday's resilient defence stood firm to earn a share of the spoils.

Spooner's team face Wednesday's Steel City rivals Sheffield United away on Saturday, kick off 11am.

Meanwhile, the U18s have been drawn away at Middlesbrough in the third round of this season's FA Youth Cup.

No date has been confirmed for the tie in the North East which is scheduled to be played before December 16.
