POLICE carried out an armed siege after a man locked himself in a house with a weapon and made threats.

Officers responded to reports of the 29-year-old in Aldercroft Avenue, Breightmet, shortly after 3am on Saturday.

Roads around the area were blocked as police, reportedly including armed officers with shields, dealt with the situation.  A spokesman from Greater Manchester Police said the incident was ended safely at around 7.30am and nobody was seriously hurt.

The man has been arrested on suspicion of a section 47 assault.

Superintendent Chris Allsop said: "Thankfully, with the help of specialist officers, we’ve been able to resolve the incident without too much disruption to the surrounding neighbourhood.

"Our officers will be patrolling the area, so local residents are encouraged to raise any concerns or questions with them.

"Although we’ve made an arrest, our enquiries into the full circumstances around this incident will continue."

Many of the residents in the nearby area woke up on Saturday morning to see the officers at the scene, which was reportedly between the Winchester Way and Red Lane junctions.

Some residents spoke of there being as many as six police vehicles, which blocked the entrance into Aldercroft Avenue from Winchester Way.

One mother in Winchester Way, who did not wish to be named, described the scene as 'crazy'.

She said: "I just woke up and I saw all of the police cars on the road.

"I heard all the noise and I was wondering what was going on. At that point there were not as many there but more and more kept showing up.

"It was a little bit crazy but I just kept myself to myself when it was going on."

One person living on Aldercroft Avenue, who also did not want to be named, said she was confused as to what was going on.

She said: "I was asleep but I saw the picture of how many cars there were and, considering all those police cars, it looked like it was more serious than what it turned out to be.

"Nothing like that normally happens here, it is usually alright."
