A DOG had to be rescued after a fire broke out in the garage of an end-of-terrace house.

Fire crews were called to Crosby Street, in Heaton at about 3pm this afternoon (Thursday).

The blaze broke out in the garage and spread to its roof but firefighters were able to rescue the animal, which escaped uninjured from its ordeal.

The occupants were not at home at the time of the incident, however a neighbouring property also suffered some smoke logging.

Crews were at the scene for nearly three hours.

Investigations are ongoing but an electrical fault is suspected to have cause the fire.

Tony McKenna, watch manager at Bolton Central Community Fire Station, said: "We sent in two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus and their rapid actions certainly prevented the further spread of the fire to neighbouring properties. It was a good stop really.

"The dog went running down the road after we rescued it and we had to go and get it"

"The occupant wasn't in at the time, but we managed to get in touch with them and give them some advice."
