THE road where a schoolboy was knocked over is earmarked for a zebra crossing.

A young pupil was involved in a collision in Highfield Road on Thursday afternoon near to St James’s C of E High School.

After the incident, the headteacher of the high school revealed they had been calling for a crossing in Highfield Road for some time.

Bolton Council has responded to the complaint, announcing plans are already in motion to install a zebra crossing.

A council spokesman said: “We are sorry to hear that a pupil has been injured.

“We do have plans to install a zebra crossing near the school entrance, on Highfield Road, and we have been talking to the school and local councillors about this.

“We are hoping we can progress this, with the school’s support, in the near future.”

On Thursday at about 3.20pm, a boy is understood to have stepped out from behind a parked van.

A motorist was driving along Highfield Road towards Farnworth when the child stepped out, witnesses told police at the scene.

The boy was seen being stretchered into an ambulance at the scene and a spokeswoman for the North West Ambulance service said he was not thought to be suffering from major trauma.

The youngster was taken to Royal Bolton Hospital.

Headteacher Tania Lewyckyj said: “Lucas Road and Highfield Road are both extremely busy at the end of school and we have asked the council to support us with crossings and we have yet to have an answer. But we have being doing that for quite some time.”

Farnworth Cllr Noel Spencer said: “I know there’s one coming for that area in Highfield Street. There’s one due.

“I’m not sure what stage it’s at.”
