KEARSLEY’s last surviving ‘Mayor’ will turn on its Christmas lights this year.

Margaret Rothwell, who served as chairman of Kearsley Urban District Council in the 1970s will do the honours at the big switch-on next week.

The 86-year-old will be at Kearsley Mount Methodist Church from 6.30pm on Tuesday, December 5 to illuminate the Christmas tree and star.

She will be joined by Father Christmas and Kearsley Youth Brass Band, while St Stephen’s Primary School will lead the carol singing.

Stephen Tonge, of Kearsley Festival Group, said:”Over the last two years we have had chosen young children who have either done something amazing or had been through a difficult time.

“This year we have a chosen a lady who’s not only lived in our community but served our community over a long period of time.Although she’s no longer in the public eye she is still an active part of our community and most importantly loves Kearsley like we do.

“It is a great honour to announce that this year we have Margaret Patricia Rothwell switching on our lights.”
