SCHOOL pupils brought a little festive cheer to the community as they attempted to bridge the age gap at a special Christmas event.

Youngsters at Moorgate Primary School in Tonge Moor invited residents to their Living Advent on Thursday.

People visited the school to have launch and watch the reception class perform a nativity play before they were given numbers, which matched to a box that had been made by the children.

Debbie Hopwood, headteacher at Moorgate, said the event was an attempt to cheer up elderly people who might be feeling lonely and isolated this Christmas.

She said: "We are trying to become the heart of the community and bridge the intergenerational gap by including the wider community into this events.

"It is really important for our children to understand our wiser and worldly residents within the community. They have a lot to offer.

"It helps for them to build links with the community and break down the barriers to these relationships.

"I just think that putting on these events breaks down these barriers at a time where some of our elderly residents become quite isolated.

"That is not what Christmas is about. This event was about the true theme of Christmas."

Mrs Hopwood said the school is looking to hold further community events throughout 2018.
