AS the temperature dropped and snow fell the organisers of a charity hike were forced to call off their event but that did not stop others having fun.

Hike the Pike for Bolton Hospice was meant to take place yesterday with hundreds already signed up to take part.

However, the organisers are looking at other dates for the hike, so it could still take place.

On Saturday, Alice Atkinson, director of income generation and communications announced the walk was cancelled.

She said: “It is with great sadness and disappointment that we announce that we have had to cancel our Hike the Pike event on Sunday due to the severe weather forecast this weekend.”

She said staff were ‘devastated’ they had had to make the decision after consulting with Bolton Mountain Rescue.

It was felt the risks were too great.

Elsewhere around the town families and walkers made the best of the wintry weather.

Plenty of people enjoyed a brisk walk in the park or took their dogs out to play in the snow.

Families were seen having snowball fights and enjoying the parks, but for most there was not enough for a snowman.

The snow fell on Friday night leaving everywhere with a lovely white covering on Saturday, although the expected snow storm on Saturday night did not materialise.
