BOLTON MP Sir David Crausby is encouraging residents to get involved with a government consultation to prevent animal cruelty.
A long time campaigner for animal rights and welfare, the Bolton North East MP is urging people to support raising the maximum prison sentence for animal cruelty from six months to five years.
He has also welcomed new proposals to recognise that animals are sentient beings, capable of feeling pain and pleasure, in UK law.
Sir David said: “I frequently hear from local residents after high profile cases of animal cruelty.
“They are often upset and angry that the terrible act has happened but are also unhappy about the lack of justice that followed.
“Labour introduced some fantastic legislation to uphold animal rights, but it is right that we re-visit this and continue to improve upon it.
“I think a five year maximum sentence is a positive step and I encourage local residents to show their support in the consultation.”
The Government public consultation on the proposals is open until January 31.
