PRIMARY school pupils in Bolton were joined by some special sporting guests yesterday, as they took part in a unique live maths lesson.

The Year 4 pupils from Clarendon Primary School were visited Bolton Wanderers players Antonee Robinson and Jeff King, and mascot Lofty the Lion, as they took part in a Super Movers - Live Lesson designed to teach maths skills and inspire children to live more active lifestyles.

Featuring stars from the worlds of football and television, Super Movers is an educational video in a new partnership between the Premier League and the BBC — mixing maths with teaching the benefits of exercise through dances and facts.

Year 4 teacher Beth Coyne said: "The day has been a really big success, and I think I have enjoyed it as much as the children. If schools are given the opportunity to do this they should take part.

"The children have absolutely loved it. The most important thing that they have learned is that maths can be fun.

"It has been important for them to see the footballers setting a good example and it has been nice for them to see their role models getting involved.

"It has also been good to show that you can link maths with PE and PE with maths, and they can still be fun and engaging subjects.

"We have been quite honoured for the Bolton Wanderers to come into our school too.

"We have Bolton Wanderers in once a week to do PE and for them to come as a one off, it has been really good to bring it all together.

"I think that the kids all have really benefitted because because they have learned their maths and maths vocabulary, and it was their role models doing the maths, and it has inspired them to follow in their footsteps."

Presented by CBBC favourites and Manchester mathematician Katie Steckles the Super Movers lesson featured games to teach children about fractions, decimals and percentages.

During the lesson the pupils watched football mascots and players as they took part in football themed challenges before solving corresponding maths activities with the help of the Wanderers stars.

Antonee Robinson said that it was great to be involved in the lesson, and hoped that the session would inspire the kids to get active.

Jeff King added that he hoped the lesson showed the pupils that there are different ways to learn other than being "sat behind a desk".
