AMBITIOUS Shannon Green is travelling the world after landing her dream career straight from school.

And now the 20-year-old from Farnworth is flying high after being recognised for her hard work at a glamorous award ceremony in London.

The former Harper Green School pupil is assistant manager at Althams Travel, based at the Farnworth branch, after fulfilling her dream to become a travel agent by becoming an apprentice.

The bright student, who had a place at a leading college, decided to follow her dreams through the apprenticeship route – which she said would allow her to study while gain experience and earn at the same time.

This week she won the Intermediate Apprentice of the Year at the National Apprenticeship Awards at London’s Grosvenor House.

She said: “Travel has been a part of my life, as a family we used to travel a lot and and I always knew I wanted to travel.”

Since starting as an apprentice in 2013, she has a range of qualifications and is still study to progress in her career.

Shannon said: “My family expected me to go to college and university but I knew the apprenticeship route was right for me, if I was graduating now, I would not have as much experience as I have now.

“My family are so proud of me.”

As part of work she has travelled and cites Paris as one of her favourite places.

Shannon said: ““I am delighted to have been part of the National Apprenticeship Awards and be named as national winner of the Intermediate Apprentice of the Year. I am so overwhelmed to have won.

“I am so proud that my apprenticeship has lead me along an amazing learning journey and given me opportunities to progress in my chosen career. Listening to such inspirational achievements from other apprentices has really confirmed that apprenticeships are an opportunity open to all. I am so proud to have been a part of this amazing experience.”

She said she had received ‘amazing’ support from her colleagues and training provider Training Station.

Now Shannon is to become an apprentice ambassador to promote the benefits of an apprenticeships including earning while you learn and the experience — and not leaving education in debt.

Sue Husband, Director of the National Apprenticeship Service added: “The National Apprenticeship Awards showcase the breadth of apprenticeships on offer in a range of dynamic industries across the country.

“Apprenticeships are for everyone and I thank every employer and apprentice celebrated for their passion for, and commitment to, apprenticeships. This year’s winners are all shining examples of how apprenticeships develop outstanding talent.”
