SOCIETY’S most vulnerable will be supported by the proceeds of this year’s Mayor’s Charity Ball.

Tickets are now on sale with proceeds going towards his chosen charities — Urban Outreach, City of Sanctuary, and NHS Bolton Hospital Charitable Trust.

Guests will enjoy a Caribbean themed band, comedian Carl Schofield, live band Freddie playing hits from the decades, and a three course meal. It will be compered by Sean McRae.

Bolton’s City of Sanctuary was recently profiled in UNCHR — The UN Refugee Agency — series A Great British Welcome highlighting the people across the UK who are supporting refugees.

City of Sanctuary is a national movement towards building a culture of hospitality and welcome, particularly for those seeking safety from war and persecution.

The report by Caroline Brothers highlighted the work the Octagon Theatre is doing with women who are seeking asylum to help them gain confidence and improve their English in the Victoria Hall, which also stages other sessions for those escaping fear.

She states: “Here they find hospitality, friendship, and an escape from worries about the status of their asylum claims.”

The Octagon tweeted: “We’re extremely proud to have Imogen Woolrich and our work on the Destitution Project, part of the growing City of Sanctuary movement, recognised by the UN refugee agency.”

The report also highlights the work of BRASS — Befriending Refugees and Asylum-Seekers — and classes at the Quaker Meeting House. Bolton’s City of Sanctuary is supported by a variety of organisations in Bolton including churches and community groups.

The ball takes place on March 9, Albert Halls, Bolton, 6.30pm. Tickets cost £36.50.
