Call for pupils' mobile phones ban

SCHOOLS are being urged to take preventative action to stop their teachers becoming victims of cyberspace bullying.

Karen Hopwood, Bolton representative for the National Association of Schoolmasters Union of Women Teachers (NASUWT), called for the law regarding the posting of "defamatory" statements on the internet to be made clearer.

Mrs Hopwood said schools should ban mobile phones from the classroom to stop footage filmed at schools being uploaded on internet sites, such as YouTube.

Her call comes amid growing concern over images of attacks and bullying being posted on the internet.

Mrs Hopwood urged schools to take strong disciplinary action against pupils found to be posting defamatory statements on the internet.

She said: "Mobile phones are being used to film teachers in the classroom and we have had members who have been attacked by pupils being filmed on phones."

She said internet footage had led to some teachers being subject to disciplinary procedures.

"Parents see a snippet of something that has happened. This snippet is completely out of context, but can lead to teachers being disciplined," said Mrs Hopwood.

"Schools need to take action to try to prevent abuse of phones. There is an inconsistency among schools as to how they deal with this.

"Some take it seriously, others do not. Some pupils are suspended, others are not."

Mrs Hopwood said the law also needed to be tightened up.

"These images are defamatory but there is no real legal redress," she said. "The problem is that some of the sites are American so it is even more difficult to seek redress on these sites."

How on earth did generations of kids ever manage to get by without a mobile phone? Our school had a payphone in the staffroom, and if a kid wanted to use it, they had to go and ask. Funnily enough, no-one ever thought they were badly done-to, and no-one ever suffered because they weren't able to be in constant communication with someone.

Well said Karen....however the world is not as safe a place as it was then. I think young people should carry a mobile in case of emergencies but there should be an age restriction for camera and video phones sold to stop the little brats that bully and attack other kids just so they can video it.

I agree that as the world isnt safe it's a good thing that so many people are caryring mobile phones, but, should they be allowed in schools anyway?
I'm sorry, but I think that pupils playing with mobile phones in lessons could compromise how much they are going to learn and shouldnt be allowed in classrooms at all.

having a mobile in school is not about being safer. who would they call? a parent? who would take 20 mins to get there? or a member of staff, trained to deal with emergencies, and available in a few seconds? i know if my kids had any kind of accident in school i would prefer to find out the whole thing from a calm member of staff telling me my kid had a grazed knee, than have my drama queen daughter telling me she had gashed her leg.

no to mobiles in school.

obviously the journey to and from school is different, but not in school!

Most schools if not all schools have already banned mobile phones. my brother goes to thornleigh and cousins to smithills and they are not allows mobile phones in school. If they are found with them they get taken of them to the end of term

I agree, children should not have mobiles whilst in the classroom, but you can't ban them from having phones.
But, why we're on the subject of banning, who are these people that every week want to ban something, thats all we hear these days, we need to ban people from talking about banning things.

whilst we are at it, lets ban:

- dumbed-down GCSE's and A levels

- teacher training courses where it is impossible to fail

- rubbish teachers (when did ever hear of a useless teacher being sacked?)

- stupid league tables

- citizenship classes

- careers teachers (how can you advise on careers when you have only ever been a teacher?)

- the ban on the cane: bring back the birch and the guillotine for serial offenders and school discipline would soon be sorted (no point putting a boring school on U tube either eh?)

What sort of emergency will they encounter whilst at school, though? If there is an emergency, a mobile phone won't help, but a teacher will.
