FIREFIGHTERS were called to a house in Cox Green Road, Egerton after a fuse box set alight.
Crews from Bolton North attended just after 9pm on Saturday.
The electricity board were also notified to disconnect the electrics.
Fortunately the fire was contained to the fuse box.
Watch Manager Richard Henthorne at Bolton North said: "The man was alerted by the crackling noise. He didn't have any smoke alarms so he was very lucky. While we were there we fitted some alarms to the property."
An electrical fault is being blamed for the fire.
Greater Manchester Fire Service offer free home safety assessments, which can include the installation of free smoke alarms.
