AN Elvis impersonator will be featured on Channel 4’s Extreme Cake Makers tonight after he received a huge jukebox cake topped with a model of the king.

Darren Leonard, from Breightmet, has raised about £80,000 for Reuben’s Retreat over the years by holding his annual Rockin’ for Reuben event.

But there were suspicious minds at his last performance on November 24, held at Dobbies Social Club in Bradley Fold, when a film crew arrived to record the performance.

At the end of the show he was asked to look the other way and when he turned back around, the huge creation was in front of him, leaving him all shook up.

The 52-year-old said: “I was just performing at the Rockin’ For Reuben event and I saw them filming.

“I thought that maybe would just be filming me for the charity’s website but then they asked me to turn away.

“Channel 4 came in with this massive cake and it was a little bit of a shock for me.

“I did not even know what it was at first. I thought it was a toy or something. When they said it was a cake I said ‘you must be joking’.

“There was so much detail. It was crazy.”

But the cake, a jam and cream sponge, did not last long as it was swiftly devoured by Mr Leonard and the audience.

According to Mr Leonard, Reuben’s Retreat was approached by Suzanne Thorp from The Frostery in Uppermill, Oldham, who is one of the bakers on Extreme Cake Makers.

And the charity recommended she make an Elvis cake to present to Mr Leonard, who has been involved with the Glossop-based charity since it started six years ago.

Mr Leonard said: "It's great that this will be aired because it will help to raise awareness of the charity."

The show featuring Mr Leonard will air tonight on Channel 4 at 5.30pm.
