A PENSIONER'S dressing gowns caught fire after coming into contact with scented candles she had lit.

The 77-year-old woman, who lives in Thornbeck Road, Markland Hill, had placed the candles on top of a cabinet in her bedroom.

But when she opened the door and left the room, the dressing gowns were set alight.

Smoke alarms were triggered in the bungalow, and the woman was able to put out the fire after filling a washing up bowl with water.

She was later taken to hospital for a precautionary check after inhaling 'quite a bit' of smoke while tackling the blaze.

Firefighters were called to the property at about 4.30am this morning (Friday).

Watch manager Karsten Boyle said:"Having those alarms fitted alerted her to the early stages of the fire.

"It highlights the importance of having smoke alarms fitted and the dangers of candles being placed on the top of cabinets which are near combustible materials.

"Never place candles near curtains, and if you have things hanging up on a door, be aware where you are placing candles in bedrooms and living areas."

Mr Boyle added that firefighters would be revisiting the area to advise residents about fire safety.
