Amir faces biggest fight yet

FANS of boxing sensation Amir Khan will see him face his toughest fight yet - getting six young troublemakers back on the straight and narrow.

The Commonwealth lightweight champion is starring in a new three-part Channel 4 series entitled Amir Khan's Angry Young Men, to be aired on August 21.

Amir, aged 20, will try to help the six young men whose violent and anti-social behaviour is spiralling out of control.

Viewers will see Amir and his team, which includes the Rev Phil Mason, chaplain to Bolton Wanderers Football Club, pull no punches as they use the discipline required in boxing to try to turn their lives around in just four weeks.

Amir hopes that the values he has when it comes to family and faith will help him to inspire the six and give them a sense of right and wrong.

Most of the men featured on the series are in their early 20s and have passed through police, courts and anger management training with little change.

Amir, who won a silver medal at the Olympic Games in 2004 in Athens, was convinced that boxing, alongside fitness training, curbing aggression and a work ethic, could make a difference.

He said: "I want to give them discipline, I want to give them respect.

"If some make it as a boxer, that's brilliant, but if they don't, at least they'll learn something.

"They'll know when to walk away from trouble. Hopefully, they'll be 100 per cent focused and that discipline will kick in."

Mr Mason said making the programme was also life-changing for him. He admitted at first he was apprehensive about it, fearing the men would be used as "guinea pigs" but said it turned out to be "worthwhile" and "exciting".

He said: "The men felt they had been rejected and they had failed their families.

"I was there to mentor them and encourage faith values, be it Muslim or Christian, and believe in themselves.

"At first, the men were reluctant to engage in. For example we took them to help the homeless in Manchester.

"At first, they did not want to do it but some went back the following the week voluntarily without the cameras there to help out again.

"People will see what happens but it was a very positive journey and a life-changing one, especially for me. Those lads are still on the journey and I am still in touch with them. The programme also shows how Muslims and Christians can work together in an age where it is believed they can't."

Amir can be seen as a role model thanks to his management team. Obviosuly there's too much money involved for them to let his real life come to the fore front. Where he is seen to encourage patriotism amongst British Muslims this is good. At the end of the day he's just like any other young lad that doesn't come from an educated environment. That doesn't give anybody the right to judge. Let the lad do his thing. For those that don't like, don't watch. For the toad calling himself King Farhan, what a wan**r. Get in the ring with him innit - wtf? Put the lad in a doctors suit and ask him to operate - it works both ways you toad!!!

I think the people who criticize Amir are entitled to their oppinion but ,He's a 20 year old man who recently put 700 thousand pounds of his own money into a gym to keep kids off the streets !! i dont see the goverment opening gyms that are cheap and avaliable in poorer areas i see the goverment taking these things away from kids ! Amir is giving back what he can and if his friends dont have respect for their community thats no fault of his !Amir is one of the decent boxers out there and if he hangs round with wannabe gangsters let him who doesnt living in an area like his if you've never lived in an almost ghetto area you cant comment on who he chooses as friends at least he had the chance to take a different path in life and is encouraging children to stay away from drugs ect , what more do people want or expect from a 20 year old man ! I think he's amazing and we need more young guys like him to encouage this generation to stay away from guns,drugs even if he changes just one childs path thats one life thats not going to be wasted some of your comments are way to judgemental and seeing as God is the only one who can judge a man your comments have gone to waste . There is a need to encourage efforts where vulnerable young men are given proper outlets channelize their energies positively.

Amir Khan, Olympic gold medallist and Commonwealth champion is leading by an example worth apprciation. He has put a fortune and his personal money on a project spending a month with the troubled ex-convicts, teaching them how to channel their aggression into sport rather than crime.
Instead of chastising the youth, the star boxer from Bolton wants to channelize their energy to constructive outlets.
His latest documentary on Channel Four expects to spread the word to everyone about how good it is for young lads to protect themselves through
a combination of sports and faith.

Let's hope commentators will find something positive to cheer about.

I think Amir Khan is an amazing boxer and amazing person!! I agree with "me" from london, basically you have said it all.
