WESTHOUGHTON Lions Rugby Club is appealing for help from locals to complete their new clubhouse.

The club is asking for tradespeople to come forward who would be willing to volunteer at the club and assist with the build.

Andrew Parkin, chairman of Westhoughton Lions, said: “We're looking for people from every trade at the moment.

"We will need everyone from plumbers, to builders, to bricklayers, to joiners and electricians.

"We would really appreciate help from anyone who can."

The clubhouse will be a two-storey building on the playing fields at the end of Cunningham Road, known as The Den, where the club currently plays matches.

It will include a main viewing club room area, a kitchen, home and away changing rooms, showers, toilets, disabled facilities, an office, a first-aid room, a plant room and a referee’s room.

Construction work began on the new facility in early February and will hopefully be completed within 18 months.

The club is also praising volunteers who are helping to raise funds for the new facility.

Three mums from Bolton are running a half marathon to help boost funds for the club.

Donna Taylor, aged 44, Helen Mewes, aged 39, and Clare Crompton, aged 33, are taking part in the Blackpool Half Marathon on Sunday, April 22.

They all have sons who play at the rugby club and want to help with improving facilities for the players and families.

Donna said: “Both my boys play at Westhoughton Lions. Matthew has played for 11 years and Zak has played for nine years.

“The facilities that we have are terrible compared to other rugby, cricket and football clubs in the area.

“Now that we are up and running with the project, we wanted to offer a bit of support and hopefully raise money in the process.”

They hope to raise £300 between them.

Andrew Parkin added: “We massively appreciate what the three of them are doing for the club. I know that they have been training hard for the run.

"We're a very family friendly club and we appreciate everyone who mucks in."

If you can volunteer to help build the clubhouse then call 07932 897435 or get in touch with the club on Facebook.
