AN episode of Black Mirror starring Maxine Peake has won a BAFTA.

Metalhead, the fifth episode in the recent series of the show created by Charlie Brooker, terrified viewers when it came out on Netflix last year.

The former Westhoughton High School pupil plays the role of Bella, who is trying to flee from robotic dogs after the unexplained collapse of human society.

And during the British Academy Television Craft Awards, which recognises behind-the-scenes talent, the episode was named the winner in the special, visual and graphic effects category.

The award was collected by DNEG TV representatives Jean-Clement Soret, Russell McLean and Joel Collins who thanked their colleagues during their acceptance speech.

The other hopeful for Bolton was Peter Kay's Car Share, which was nominated for best writing in the comedy category.

But Peter, Sian Gibson and Paul Coleman lost out to Inside No. 9 creators Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith.

The next ceremony, the British Academy Television Awards, will be held on Sunday, May 13.

Three Girls, featuring Maxine, has been nominated for best mini-series while Sian Gibson from Car Share is up for best female performance in a comedy.
