POLICE have hit back at illegal off-road bikers by crushing dozens of the vehicles.

The move is part of wider efforts to cut out anti-social and dangerous use of motorbikes across Greater Manchester.

Officers in Wigan and Leigh led the destruction of the bikes, feeding them into a crusher and then recycling the remaining materials.

Superintendent Gareth Parkin from GMP’s Wigan Division said: “These vehicles are being used illegally and the fact is that riders may not realise this and need to ensure they are aware of where they can ride safely and without posing a threat to members of the public.

“We’re sending out a clear message to offenders, we will use all our powers to take action which could see their bikes seized and ultimately end up being crushed.”

Police were able to seize 100 bikes across Greater Manchester, with 25 being used illegally and another 75 caught with no insurance.

Officers were supported by officers of Wigan Council, including Will Blandamer, assistant director for partnership, safeguarding and reform.

He said: “We’re very aware of the detrimental impact this issue can have on local residents and are pleased to be supporting the work of GMP to tackle illegal off-road bikes.”

As part of the process police brought in representatives from the group Recycling Lives which depolluted and recycled the vehicles whilst supporting charitable and community programmes.
