A DRIVER and passenger evacuated a taxi just seconds before it set on fire.
The drama occurred shortly after 7pm this evening on Beaumont Road at its junction with Heaton Bridge.
The dual carriageway was closed for 30 minutes while a fire crew from Horwich wearing breathing apparatus tackled the blaze.
Watch manager Jason Martin said: “The taxi broke down and the male driver and female passenger left the vehicle. It appears that there was an electrical fault which caused the engine to set on fire.”
He added: “The heat was quite intense and melted part of the road.”
No-one was injured in the incident.
