A 'SEA of fire' confronted firefighters when they were called to a blaze in Radcliffe.
Firefighters from three stations were called to Pioneer Mills in Milltown Street where piles of domestic waste had caught fire.
Watch manager Peter Fletcher from Whitefield's station said: "It was a sea of fire essentially, this huge area, like a tennis court, that kind of size was all alight.
"Imagine the biggest bonfire you've ever seen."
Crews from Bury and Broughton also attended after receiving the call at about 10.30pm last night.
Mr Fletcher said all kinds of items were in the waste piles which were on fire, he said: "Everything from clothing to building materials."
The cause of the fire is still under investigation and firefighters have been unable to contact the owner of the site.
A further inspection of the site will take place this morning to ensure the area is safe.
This is the latest in a string of fires at the site since May last year and community group, Little Britain Angler's, has called on Bury Council to take action.
There have also been many complaints of flytipping at the site in the past.
