BOLTON’S Megan Gidney put in a medal-winning performance on the international stage as she won bronze at the Spanish Youth Open.
The 16-year-old was playing alongside fellow English player Denise Payet and Amy Wang of the USA in the junior girls’ team event.
They combined to beat the Netherlands 3-0 and Spain A 3-2 in the group stage, Gidney completing the first victory with a 3-1 (11-8, 11-4, 4-11, 11-3) victory over Emma van der Zanden.
That put them into the semi-finals where they were beaten 3-0 by a strong French team and had to settle for bronze, awarded to both losing semi-finalists.
In the doubles, van der Zanden avenged her defeat when, partnering Yoeke Gunsing, they beat Gidney and Jasmin Wong 3-1 (12-14, 11-4, 12-10, 11-4) in the last 32.
In the singles, Gidney, from Blackrod, beat Estonia’s Sirli Jaanimagi 3-0 (11-3, 11-5, 11-7) in the group stage, but defeats to Spanish and Italian opponents meant she could not qualify for the knockout stage.
