PLANS to increase allowances for councillors who hold senior town hall positions will be opposed by the Liberal Democrats.
They will vote against a rise in ‘special responsibility allowances’ for the leadership, cabinet members and chairmen and vice chairmen of some committees.
The increase also applies to the leader and deputy leader of the Conservatives and the leader of minority opposition groups with at least 10 per cent of council seats.
David Wilkinson, Liberal Democrat group leader, said the item was not appropriate for the Mayor-making and his party could not agree to “controversial constitutional changes” without debate.
