LITTER pickers came together to tackle an area of Horwich blighted by rubbish, collecting more than 40 bags in the process.

The group from the Horwich First Community Litter Pickers headed out early on Saturday morning and met by the bin at the top of Green Lane.

They then began the task of clearing the area of Tigers Clough of litter.

As well as the usual collection of crisp packets, bottles and cans, the team also found a number of discarded car tyres and wheels.

The group managed to collect a total of 42 bags of rubbish and were provided with cakes from Poppins Tea Rooms and AFG Law.

A spokesman from the group said:“Many thanks to all the volunteers who gave up their time and also AFG LAW and Poppins Tea Rooms for providing refreshments to all participants, it is very much appreciated!

“Details of June’s litter pick will be posted soon.”

Those who took part included town councillors as well as the mayor of Horwich Cllr Peter Wright.

Cllr Steve Chadwick, who helps to organise the regular events, said: "We had a lot of people down, which was really nice to see, but there was quite a lot of rubbish left so there is still a bit that needs to be cleared.

"There might have to be another litter pick held in that area in the future.

"One thing I would like to say is thank you to all the residents who have got behind it. It is great to see.

"And thanks to AFG Law and Poppins Tea Rooms who provided us with refreshments. It was really appreciated."

He added that the next litter picking event will be held later in June.

The group has held previous events, including at Old Station Park, during which the team found a chef's knife with an eight-inch blade that was handed in to police officers.
