RESIDENTS are calling for a ‘dangerous’ junction to be made safer.

One man said since he moved near to the India Gate junction two years ago he had seen up to 35 accidents.

The junction is between Ramsbottom Road, Tottington Road, Bury Road and Bradshaw Road.

John Llewellyn, aged 65, lives in Tottington Road, he said: “The problem is they come up from Hawkshaw and it’s a blind bend, they come up so fast and by the time they see someone it’s too late.”

In the two years since Mr Llewellyn moved there he has seen 30 to 35 accidents, which he has been keeping a record of.

He says often him and his wife will help drivers but have been sworn at and pipped at by other drivers who swerve around the scenes of crashes.

Mr Llewellyn believes a roundabout would help to bring drivers to a stop before they got the junction.

Another resident, who did not wish to be named, contacted the council about the junction, he said: “This junction has had over 20 accidents which I am aware of within the last 12 months.

“It is so dangerous I strongly believe that a fatality or serious injury will occur unless basic and remedial measures are taken by the council.”

The council response to the enquiry revealed the authority only had details of one accident with an injury in the last five years.

The email also revealed there was 'no mainstream budget for undertaking any road safety interventions'.

The resident had suggested a double-mini roundabout but was advised this would cost £30,000.
