FOOTBALL fans watched on in delight as England trounced Panama 6-1 in their second world cup game.

People hit the pubs and bars in the town centre with their fingers crossed, hoping the team could keep up their winning start to the tournament in Russia.

Hogarths in Churchgate was packed out for the match at 1pm, with security preventing people entering after the match had started as the pub had filled up.

Donning their white or red England shirts, the fans looked on in excitement as John Stones opened the scoring at the eight-minute mark.

After that the men in white were all over an out-played Panama side, with Harry Kane grabbing a hattrick, including two penalties, as well as another goal from Stones and a quality curling effort from outside the box by Jesse Lingard.

Panama grabbed a late consolation through Felipe Baloy, the country's first every World Cup goal, and their fans responded with rapturous celebration.

After the final whistle, fans headed outside the pubs and congregated in Churchgate to bask in the sunshine and at the winning result.

Friends Jo Barlow and Andrew Bennett were over the moon with the result.

Ms Barlow said: "If Carlsberg did days then this would be one of them. I think when you score six goals in a game, you are going to leave yourself open at the back.

"I think Lingard will be on fire against Belgium. This England side is so composed."

Mr Bennett said: "To be five goals up at half-time was just great."

The result was the biggest winning margin for an England side at a World Cup and Kane's hattrick now puts him alongside Geoff Hurst and Gary Lineker as players who have scored three goals in a game.

It puts England top of Group G on the same amount of points and same goal difference as Belgium.

The two sides will meet on Thursday with kick-off at 7pm.
