POLICE negotiators were called to a house in Horwich after a man barricaded himself inside.

Officers were called to the property, in Julia Mews, off Julia Street, shortly before 6pm tonight.

The man, who police believe to have mental health issues, had earlier been seen throwing possessions, including furniture and vinyl records, out of a window and attempting to start a fire in street.

No one else was in the property at the time, and police say no one has sustained any injuries.

The man, who police believe to have mental health issues, has been arrested for possession of an offensive weapon, threats to kill, as well as other public order offences. He has been taken to hospital.

The street outside the house was cordoned off by officers for several hours after the incident.

Firefighters also attended the scene due to a minor risk of fire.

Inspector Alex Metcalfe of GMP's Bolton division said: "After concerns from residents, we have had to take action.

"We have a man with mental health issues who barricaded himself in his house.

"Negotiators were called, but he would not engage with them so we had to force entry.

"It was brought to a very successful conclusion."
