AS the curtain all but closes for the summer and theatre companies look forward to their new season, local people are being invited experience the delight and drama of the stage.

New Rosemere Operatic Society is staging a Come and Sing Family Musical next month at which children can take part in workshops to learn their favourite songs from hit musicals before enjoying an evening concert for the whole family.

It is hoped that some may join Bolton's amateur theatre scene.

Katherine Seager, from the society, said: "We hope that this will give people of all ages the opportunity to enjoy an informal workshop and concert.

"For those who are new to performing, it's a good chance to get a taster of what it's like to sing on stage.

"For those who have sung before or who have an interest in joining our society, it's a great opportunity to meet new people and find out what it's like to be a part of New Rosemere.

"We are singing family friendly music, but the event is not just for families - all are welcome and there is something for everyone to enjoy."

Children will learn songs from films including Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, Oliver, Mary Poppins and many more.

This is the second time the society has staged an event like this.

"Last year was very well attended. In fact, we gained 15 new members as a result," said Katherine, " They have been an asset to the society, bringing great energy and quality to rehearsals and performances alike. The workshop and concert were both very enjoyable, with a welcoming, friendly atmosphere."

Katherine added: "We always welcome new members. There are real benefits to joining a society like ours. Not only can you enjoy singing in a varied programme of concerts and shows; you can meet new people and make lifelong friends.

"Theatre is a fantastic opportunity to build confidence in all areas of life — there's nothing like the thrill of performing on stage. Great friendships are built through theatre and there's a real sense of community amongst the groups in Bolton.

"The quality of performance also gives our theatre scene an edge; there really are some fantastic groups out there. Last year, we removed 'amateur' from our society's name, as so many audience members commented that the name didn't do justice to the quality of our performances."

Members will start rehearsals for their next shows and concerts in September.

In March 2019, the society will present Trial by Jury and HMS Pinafore.

Katherine said: "We would encourage anyone who is interested to come along to our welcome night at Deane United Reform Church on September 3, starting at 7.45pm.

"Our next concerts will be at St Peter's Church, Halliwell on October 20 and November 3 at Adlington Community Centre. Keep an eye on our website and Facebook page for further details: www.newrosemere.com and www.facebook.com/pg/NRAOS90/."

Come and Sing Family Musicals will takes place at The Barlow, Edgworth on Saturday, July 14. The workshop takes place from 10am to 4pm and concert starts at 6.30pm.

Organisers are asking for a suggested £2 donation per adult/child for the workshops.

The concert is £5 or £15 for a family of four.
