A SCHOOL is back on track to transform the lives of children who are at a crisis point in their education after it raised its standards from inadequate to good in less than 12 months.

TLG School, — which stands for Transforming Lives for Good — has been praised by Ofsted, which inspectors only last May heavily criticised.

Children who find it difficult to settle in mainstream school and are at risk of exclusion attend the school, which is run as a partnership between Farnworth Baptist Church and the education charity TLG.

This time round, Ofsted inspectors found that pupils are thriving at the school in Farnworth, and make good progress because of the "individual support that they receive".

The report stated: "Pupils start at the school with a wide range of abilities, which are generally lower than the standard expected for their age. Focused teaching provides support for pupils to fill the gaps in their learning."

It adds: "This is a forward-thinking organisation that is firmly committed to improving the lives of the pupils who experience difficulties in mainstream settings. "Knowledgeable staff support pupils well to manage their social, emotional and mental health needs."

The new headteacher was praised for fostering a "culture of ambition that is raising aspirations for pupils' achievement".

"Relationships between staff and pupils are excellent. This enables pupils to feel settled and supported and has improved pupils’ attitudes towards learning, as well as their behaviour, attendance and their overall welfare," found Ofsted inspectors.

Pupils are said to "make significant strides" in their learning and take pride in their work.

Inspectors reported: "Pupils’ attendance has greatly increased from their prior attendance in other settings."

Headteacher Susie McGibbon said: "We are delighted that the Ofsted report recognises the hard work we have put in as a team over the last year. We aim to continue to improve so that we provide the best support for these young people who are struggling on their educational journeys, by offering hope and a brighter future."

John Bradbury, proprietor, of the school, added: "The Ofsted report rightly commends the hard work put in by Susie as Head Teacher and the TLG support staff. It's good to have published recognition of the fantastic work we do with young people."
