LOVE and heartbreak took centre stage when Bolton Little Theatre staged the 1947 play The Heiress.

Adapted from the Henry James novel Washington Square, audiences were whisked away to 1850s America and Europe where they follow the life of Catherine Sloper, whose father blames her for the death of mother.

Catherine thinks she has found love with Morris Townsend, but her father threatens her to disinherit her.

The 1949 film of the play starred Olivia de Havilland as Catherine Sloper, Montgomery Clift as Morris Townsend, directed by William Wyler.

The drama was staged by Bolton Little Theatre with cast in full period costume in 1969.
