A CHARITY fire walk has been cancelled for fears it would be inappropriate after weeks of moorland fires around Greater Manchester.

Bolton Hospice has cancelled its Fire and Ice Walk 2018 which was due to take place at the end of October, the event had already been pushed back from February.

Other events are still going ahead and some people who signed up for the event have already transferred to other fundraising days.

In a comment on Facebook the Chorley New Road hospice said: "To all our Fire & Ice walkers...

"Due to the recent wild fires across the North West which have affected many local people and wildlife considerably, we have decided to cancel this years Fire & Ice Walk.

"We have a calendar packed full of events for the rest of 2018, plus great plans for 2019 so please keep an eye out for anything else you would like to participate in — we always appreciate your amazing support!"

A spokesperson for the hospice said: "We think with everything that's happened with Rivington and Saddleworth Moors it's maybe a little bit inappropriate and we have so much more going on I'm sure people could jump into something else like the Christmas Fair or Hike the Pike."

The hospice said that despite the cancellation there had been a good number of people registering for the event and all those who had paid to sign up had been contacted and offered a refund.

Some people have already opted to switch to other events like the Bubble Rush, which takes place in Queens Park on September 16.

The moor fires have been burning for almost three weeks and firefighters from across the country have been working during the hot summer to contain the fires and get them under control.
