INSPIRATIONAL leaders were honoured for their contribution to society during a special graduation ceremony at the University of Bolton.

A sea of gowns has overtaken the town centre this week, with nine ceremonies across four days.

Among those recognised was Bolton-born solicitor Joe Egan who received an honorary degree, becoming a Doctor of Laws for his outstanding contribution to law.

The 69-year-old is the founder of Joe Egan Solicitors, which has offices in Mawdsley Street and Wood Street.

Mr Egan said: "It is a huge honour to be awarded a degree like this in my home town where I was born and grew up. I have lived here all my life apart from my time at university and travelling.

"I set up my own firm here just over 30 years ago."

Mr Egan grew up in Lever Grove, the son of a coal miner and cleaner. After graduating from Kent University with a degree in sociology and economy history, he travelled the world, visiting Europe, Australia and America.

The father-of-three now lives in Princess Road, Lostock, with his wife Clare, who is an accountant and practice manager at his firm.

The highlight of his career, Mr Egan said, was his year as president of The Law Society, which came to an end just two weeks ago.

His presidency placed him at the head of the 136,000-strong solicitors' profession in England and Wales represented by the independent professional body for solicitors.

Mr Egan said: "I was hoping to take the summer off but I have found there is so much work at the firm that I have basically gone straight back in.

"We have three matters coming up to trial in the next week or so."

Giving words of encouragement to the graduating law students in Bolton, Mr Egan said: "It is a fabulous profession, one where you can help lots of people solve various problems that they have in life.

"It is intellectually challenging and, if you get it right, the financial benefits are there.

"A degree of law does not necessarily mean you have to work in the legal profession. It can help in all sorts of professions and jobs."
