IT is always lovely to hear from our readers — after all you are the very best people to tell us all about Bolton in the past.

Stuart O’Hara has fond memories of living in the Derby Street area of Bolton — in Daubhill — as a youngster.

He now lives in Farnworth but can recall, clearly, what life was like when our photograph was taken.

He tells us: The photograph of Derby Street taken from the corner of Peace Street, looking towards Bolton Town Centre, brought back memories.

“I was born in Thomas Rostron Street only a few hundred yards from that spot in a terraced house which has long since been demolished.”

He explains that the pub in the top right hand side of the photograph was the Ram’s Head which would later become the ROAB Club — a working men’s benevolent society club.

“The shop next door to the pub was Mearn’s green grocery store.

“When I was about 12 or 13-years-old I delivered produce for him to nearby houses in a small hand cart made for me by my father.

“The tower halfway down the photograph was Magee Marshall’s brewery.

“The horse drawn carts are brewery drays carrying barrels of beer for delivery to nearby Magee Marshall pubs.

“I spent the first 14 years of my life in that area and have many interesting tales to tell,” explains Stuart.
