A FAMILY from Bolton will feature on prime time television as builders descend on their home to give it a total makeover.

The home improvements are being made to make life that little bit easier for nine-year-old William Taylor-Mann, who has severe autism.

William's condition means he has an underdeveloped sense of danger, and actively attempts to climb through the windows at his home.

For his safety, he cannot be left unsupervised upstairs.

The house has also suffered flood damage due to William turning on the bathroom taps and leaving them running.

The youngster is also extremely sensitive to noise which often makes sharing a bedroom with his siblings Scarlett, aged eight, and Penelope, aged one, very difficult.

William's autism prevents him from talking, which means he often has to communicate by crying or showing distress.

Dad Martin Taylor-Mann began the process of building a third upstairs bedroom to create more space for his children.

But financial constraints, on top of fitting the work around his job as a detention officer at Bury police station and helping wife Heather care for William, has delayed his progress.

So far, he has created a doorway for the bedroom and installed a stud wall, but he home remains 'unfit for purpose' and is a 'massive strain' on the family's life.

Now, the family has been chosen to feature on BBC One's DIY SOS: The Big Build to give them a helping hand.

Between September 11 and 20, construction teams from across Bolton will descend on the house to help build a downstairs extension with bespoke adaptations, separate bedrooms, a calm space for William and a social area for the family.

The teams will also be involved with safe-proofing the ground floor and rear garden.

A BBC spokeswoman said: "William is simply desperate for his own space that is quiet and calming.

"The family’s current house is unfit for purpose and a massive strain on the family’s life. DIY SOS invites kind volunteers and generous companies to step up and help this family in need."

The programme is looking for skilled tradespeople and local suppliers to help with the build.

To take part, firms must attend a trades day on August 29.

To get involved, email DIYSOSBolton@bbc.co.uk detailing your trade, availability and contact details.
