A burglar has been jailed after more than £200,000 worth of jewellery was stolen from a store in Times Square Shopping Centre.

Paul Mitchell, 37, of Orchard Avenue, was sentenced after pleading guilty at Croydon Crown Court on August 14.

The court heard police were called to an automated alarm at TK Maxx shortly before 11.30pm on July 15.

Two men dressed in high-vis jackets and armed with a pick-axe and a crowbar had broken into the store through a fire exit and made their way into Times Square Shopping Centre, where they headed towards Ernest Jones jewellers.

They smashed a window to the store and then stole "around £232,000 worth of jewellery".

Two men were seen running from the shopping centre towards Greyhound Road and were chased by police.

After a police dog unit arrived, one of the suspects was found hiding in a garden and was arrested.

The other man fled but was later identified by officers using CCTV footage and arrested the following day.

Mitchell pleaded guilty to burglary and was jailed for three-and-a-half years.

Meanwhile, another man arrested on suspicion of burglary has since been released under investigation, Scotland Yard said.
