A MAN has been jailed for two years after “stamping” on his partner’s head in a sustained attack, days after he was released from prison having previously committed a similar offence to the same victim.

Bobby Stewart, of Kirkham Street, Tonge Moor, assaulted his partner Kirsty Schofield on June 7, forcing her to flee from her own home wrapped up in her bed sheets.

Stewart, aged 29, was sentenced to 24 months in prison by the Honorary Recorder of Bolton, Judge Timothy Clayson, and was issued with a restraining order preventing contact with Ms Schofield.

Bolton Crown Court heard that the attack followed an argument resulting from Stewart’s “obsession” with the idea that Ms Schofield had been unfaithful while he was in prison.

A transcript from a 999 call made by Ms Schofield from her neighbour’s house following the attack was heard by the court and, together with photographic evidence, was used to convict her former partner.

In the call, Ms Schofield said: “He’s accused me of cheating on him. He stamped on my head on the bathroom floor.”

Stewart repeatedly punched and kicked Ms Schofield in a sustained attack which left her with serious injuries.

The couple were in bed at Ms Schofield’s home after having had a few drinks when the argument began, the court heard.

Stewart was serving two suspended sentences for possession of drugs, handling stolen goods and assault by beating.

He was released from custody several days before the attack on June 7.

William Magill, prosecuting, told the court: “This has all the hallmarks of an extremely manipulative domestic abuser.”

Judge Clayson told Stewart, who appeared in court via video link, that he showed no empathy for the victim.

He said: “You are a strongly built man who uses his build and strength to impose your will on intimate partners.”

Stewart was sentenced to 15 months imprisonment for actual bodily harm and a further nine months for a breach of a suspended sentence to be served concurrently, taking his total sentence to two years.

The judge also issued a restraining order preventing Stewart directly or indirectly contacting Ms Schofield.
