A COMMUNITY litter pick took place to spruce up several of Radcliffe's roads.

Volunteers kick-started the day with a bacon 'butty and brew' before taking to the streets in the Radcliffe West area for a two-hour clean-up.

In just two hours, the team of councillors, local volunteers and members of staff from Asda Radcliffe collected more than 30 bags of rubbish.

The collaborative event on Sunday, August 18, was jointly organised by Bury Council and Radcliffe's Asda store.

Asda provided refreshments to keep the participants fuelled, while Bury Council arranged for equipment such as litter pickers, rubbish bags and high-visibility jackets to be made available on the day.

Bury Council leader and Cllr for Radcliffe West, Rishi Shori, said: "I am pleased we were able to collect so much rubbish.

“I would like to thank Asda for all their support. It shows what can be achieved when local councillors, businesses and the community work together.

“Litter does not drop itself and we all need to take responsibility to keep our environment clean, throw our rubbish in the bin and love where we live."

Between 10am and 12noon, the team of volunteers descended on the streets surrounding Asda, including the Hutchinson Way estate, Radcliffe skate park, Ulundi Street, School Street and Coomassie Street, collecting plastic food trays, sandwich wrappers and general waste.

They were led by Asda Radcliffe’s community colleague Stephen Bonsall.

Lee Haken, the general store manager for Asda Radcliffe said: "Asda like to pride ourselves on supporting the local community and we jumped at the chance of taking part in this clean up.

"We want to help keep Radcliffe as clean and tidy as possible and we are pleased our colleagues have been able to support that."

The event was a follow-up to a previous litter pick held at the end of March which was jointly organised by the Council and McDonald's in Radcliffe.
