Hats off to charity knitters

SHOPPERS and staff at a Bolton town centre supermarket are knitting hundreds of mini bobble hats to raise money for older people.

Sainsbury's are urging customers to come to the Trinity Way store and take up their knitting needles to create the hats to place on bottles of "innocent" smoothies.

The hat-wearing bottles will be put on the shelves and the supermarket will then donate 25p to Age Concern from each one sold.

Gareth Evans, chief officer at Age Concern Bolton, said: "The more hats we knit, the more money we can raise. It really is fun and relatively quick to do as the hats are so little."

If people do not want to create a hat for the Sainsbury's Big Knit event, they can take needles and wool to the store, which will be passed on to Age Concern centres and charity shops.
