A MOTHER has told how her son was left screaming in pain after being hit by a firework.
Jessica McDonald had taken five-year-old Jayden to a bonfire at a neighbour's house.
They were sitting outside as the night drew to a close and the last firework was lit.
But as is sparked into action, it fell over, and exploded in their direction.
Mrs McDonald, aged 32 of Singleton Avenue, Breightmet, told how colourful shots from the firework hit her son on the hip.
She added: "The firework burnt through Jayden's clothes and my coat. He was really screaming. I tried to pat it out with my hands - he must have been in agony.
"I was trying to run into the house and I tripped over and shouted "he's burning, he's burning". My husband William grabbed him and put him in the sink and we waited for the ambulance to arrive. His skin was hanging off and we could smell it burning."
Jayden was taken to the Royal Bolton Hospital and was treated for the burns. Today he went back to the hospital to have his dressing changed and when he saw the burns he was sick.
Mrs McDonald said: "This has been a nightmare for us, I'm just glad that any scars can be covered up. I dread to think what it would have been like if it hit him in the face. He could have been blinded.
"You hear about the dangers of fireworks but you never think something like this will happen to you.
"Jayden was so shocked by what happened and said he does not want to see fireworks again."
Jayden a pupil at Leverhulme Primary School is staying at home until he has recovered.
