Horwich eye up record

9:38am Wednesday 28th November 2007

HORWICH Cycling Club have their sights set on a new North-west Cyclo-Cross League record.

The local riders have won the league for the last six years and are strong favourites to take the title again this season.

The league has been going since 1958 and a South Manchester-based club holds the record number of wins with 10 with one other team just one win behind them.

Those victories came some time ago and Horwich are the modern-day dominant force, led by star rider David Brailsford.

He has won a number of individual titles in the 12-race season over the past few years and is leading the way again in this year's series.

Horwich organised the ninth race of the season at Leverhulme Park on Sunday when Brailsford had a difficult day, completing the 16-mile course in 14th. But it is unlikely to prevent him from clinching the individual title again.

Horwich is the biggest team in the North-west with 15 cyclo-cross riders and they are determined to maintain their form over the next few seasons in a bid to set a new record number of title wins.

Cyclo-cross is a highly popular sport in some European countries and well represented in Britain. It originated in 1910 as a winter version of road racing.

Horwich Cycling Club organises two of the 12 races during the season and they are the most successful of the local clubs who compete at the sport, with riders from Lancashire Road Club and Bolton Triathlon Club also taking part.
